Volunteer abroad

Volunteering is one of the most exciting options for people that want to live abroad and a way to know a face of the country that other programs would not let you see. Basically, volunteering is about working in a charity or public benefit entity, whether it belongs to the government or not, without money compensation. Most volunteer programs will organize to provide you with lodging, food and, in some cases, health insurance.

Volunteering should not be confused with "working for free". You get many things in return, and you have to see your volunteer position as a regular work agreement. It is important that you choose an organization that will have a job description for you. A common mistake made by some organizations is to get a volunteer "just in case" or for "general activities". The best reward you can have as a volunteer is accomplishing objectives and getting things done.

It is highly recommended that you choose your volunteer program according to the activities that you will be actually be performing. The most frequent mistake done by volunteers is to choose an entity based on the mission of that organization. For example, girls that like children choose orphanages because they want to play with children all day long. However, they end up helping in the kitchen, the laundry or other activities and have limited contact with children. Do not take for granted the activities you are going to perform. If you can have a signed contract or job description, you will avoid many problems.

It is also recommended that you choose a placement for at least 6 months. It takes time to get used to your activities, and it is exhausting for both the organization and you to stop your volunteering when you finally are good at what you do.

Volunteering will help you gain language skills faster if you try to speak only the local language. Volunteer programs are generally less expensive than other exchange options and provide a great insight about the culture and people of your host country.
